Reverend Dr. James Edward Dunn

He was born in Eutaw, Alabama; at the age of ten, his family moved to the city of Chicago.  He is a graduate of the Chicago Public School System from Morgan Park High School.  Pastor Dunn matriculated through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Restaurant Management.

After graduating from college, Pastor Dunn worked in the foodservice industry. He integrates several years of management and administrative experience obtained from that period into his call to ministry.

Pastor Dunn was an active member of Greater Tabernacle Holiness Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago before being called and anointed to preach the Word of God in May 2000.  In June 2000, he was licensed to preach the gospel.  Understanding that this calling required pastoral preparation, Pastor Dunn began his seminary journey at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois in September 2000.  He was ordained on September 30, 2001, at Greater Tabernacle Holiness Missionary Baptist Church.

During his seminary training, God led Pastor Dunn to Saint John Church-Baptist as a student intern.  After his internship, he assisted with the design and implementation of the Evangelism Ministry, and served as its Director.  He also worked as the full-time Director of Christian Education for nine years, before becoming pastor of our church.

In June 2007, he received a Master of Divinity Degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Although he was already ordained, God led Pastor Dunn to pursue an ordination with the American Baptist Churches USA in 2010.  He completed the process and this ordination was also recognized by Saint John Church-Baptist.  In June 2014, he completed his Doctor of Ministry Degree in Church Leadership from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary.  His thesis focused on “Recruiting, Developing, and Training Emerging Leaders for Future Church Leadership.”

Pastor Dunn has earned the following certificates: Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders Certificate from the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center, Lombard, Illinois; and Clinical Pastoral Education Equivalency Certificate from Family Centered Hospice, Addison, Illinois.  In 2015, Pastor Dunn received the William A. Johnson Award in Educational Ministries from the American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago.

He is a former faculty member of the Chicago Baptist Institute International.  He has served with the Luis Palau Evangelistic Crusade in Chicago and Chang Mai, Thailand.  Pastor Dunn recently traveled on a pilgrimage to Israel including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Sea of Galilee area.

Pastor Dunn consistently promotes the mission and vision of the church through preaching, teaching, training, and equipping members and leaders for the work of the ministry.  He is currently leading our congregation through a faith-based strategic change initiative designed by the Lydia Group.  This initiative assists churches with addressing the challenges of ministry in the twenty-first century.  Pastor Dunn is very passionate about helping others to grow in unity and Christian discipleship.

He is married to Sister Jan S. Dunn, our beautiful First Lady.  They are the parents of two adult sons.
